Thursday Thoughts: Bookish Shame

Thursday Thoughts is an original, weekly meme created over at Ok, Let’s Read.

BOOKISH SHAME

Do you read exclusively one of the following or a mix: Adult, New Adult, Young Adult, Middle Grade? What are your opinions on shaming adults who read YA? Do you agree or disagree that adults reading YA deters actual young adults from reading because they may “feel as if their genre is taken over?” Do you think NA as a whole gets a bad reputation? Do you think it’s deservedly so?

I read mostly anything at any time to be quite honest. There are SO many books available to us that I just cannot imagine limiting myself to one genre over another. While I will admit that I do not read much (if any) middle grade it really isn’t a genre bias. It quite literally has to do with how many other things have piled up on my Oh My Gosh, That Looks Great, I Must Read it NOW List. I have seen quite a few while shelving at work that I thought might be interesting but so far none to usurp my current reading wishlist.

As for the idea of feeling like adults have “taken over” the genre of Young Adult… I just don’t get what all the hullaballoo is about. I really don’t. See a book you like, read a book you like. End of story. Who cares how many others are reading it? And who cares how old they are? I don’t think it should matter or have any bearing on what a person does or does not read. Read what you want, when you want as often as you want and don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it. Also, I will be honest in saying I didn’t even know what New Adult was until about two weeks ago. Seriously. I don’t pay attention to labels unless it concerns me telling a patron where to find something in the library.

I’m very anti-shaming anything! Read books and be happy! No fighting!

What about you?

  1. Yep, yep! I’m a very eclectic reader and I read just about everything :) This week I read a children’s classic, DNF’d a non-fiction book on bug sex and evolution (not near as interesting as it sounds, lol), and I’m currently reading a YA contemporary romance/humor. Next week I’m going to be reading a YA science fiction and then a non-fiction ‘coffee table’ book featuring photographs of different bodies of water, of Michigan (my state). I’m all over the place, lol.
